Finger on the Pulse X Legion Bar
Swing through Legion (790 Metropolitan Ave at Humboldt) to check out two great parties. Up front you’ve got Soul, Indie Punk and more, and in the backroom, Brooklyn’s own hip-hop band the Outabodies. These guys played a random house party in our building way back and are always a lot of fun. All free.

Tribe performs at Mind. Body. Soul.

by whizhouse January 21, 2010

We posted our photos early this morning (around 3am) and sent the link out to a few blogs. Thanks to everyone who linked back to the sets, screen shot appreciation included below the jump.

Here is a medley of songs from Tribe Called Quest and we’ll post more in the future but with so many videos already up from the show at every major hip-hop site, we’ll hold off on putting up our Jay Electronica montage until Act II drops.

Gawker Artists presents NSFW (Not Safe for Work)
I have a feeling Dan will be looking forward to this one. Press release, RSVP info below:
Opening ReceptionThursday, January 287-9 pm 210 Elizabeth Street, 4th FloorRSVP to artists@gawker.com Gawker Artists presents NSFW (Not Safe For Work), a group show of works by Gawker Artists Steve Ellis, Emiliano Granado, Justine Lai, Heather Morgan and Randy Polumbo, and the latest exhibition in the Art@Gawker series.Featuring sexually suggestive works typically considered off limits for the workplace, NSFW showcases Gawker Artists’ playful irreverence and ongoing exploration of the boundaries and roles of corporate art programs.Steve Ellis’ Amanda Lepore Stripping Pen is inspired by Lepore’s own story of transsexual transformation. Ellis’ iconic painting celebrates both a common object and the reinvention of sexual identity. In Ellis’ own words, “This portrait on the surface looks like a curvy porn star, but instead the model is a sculpted sexual being and work of art unto herself.”Emiliano Granado’s photographs document the raucous atmosphere of spring break, capturing the many desperate ploys for attention and culpability of the crowd in encouraging booze fueled hedonism. Granado’s matter-of-fact perspective highlights the vulgar realities of this modern American phenomenon. In her ongoing series Join or Die, Justine Lai paints herself having sex with the U.S. Presidents in chronological order. By objectifying these revered faces, Lai’s striking and comical portraits explore the nature of power. Lai examines her own identity through the lens of American history, exploring and asserting herself through imaginary pleasure, dominance, liberty, and control.Heather Morgan’s lush paintings elicit feelings of confrontation, vulnerability and empathy. Her unconventional female figures challenge common ideals of beauty and sexuality. Drawn in by their defiant gazes, the viewer is invited behind the curtain into the lives of Morgan’s confident, yet dysfunctional subjects.Randy Polumbo’s provocative sculptures made from replicas of mass market sex toys inspire, in his own words, “questions of beauty, libidinal economies, and propagation … from the contrast between our public faces and private appetites.” Polumbo’s works, which at first glance seem more alien than erotic, require a double take before realizing their actual implications. Each of the works in NSFW recontextualizes its subject, inspiring new interpretations of their beauty, intention and importance via timeless isolation and mischievous tribute. Simultaneously uncomfortable, shocking, and humorous, the works force the viewer to question their own definitions of sexual objects and acts. As a whole, NSFW questions the meaning, role, and audience of sexually provocative art work, in the context of a corporate setting which commonly avoids works that are not safe.NSFW is curated by sisters, Genevieve and Liz Dimmitt. Mind. Body. Soul. - A Concert Event to Raise Awareness of Diabetes

by whizhouse January 21, 2010

Wow. It’s 3am and we’re still high on hip-hop after celebrating at Phife Dawgs “Mind. Body. Soul.  - A Concert Event to Raise Awareness of Diabetes.” Hip-hop was certainly in the building, in its purest form.

After shooting a future exclusive for KeapHope in Manhattan with a rapper to be named later, we made our way out to BK’s Knitting Factory with our friend Derek Pike to check out a star studded event from the foundation of hip-hop to its possible next savior. We’ll have video up tomorrow but for now enjoy this fantastic set from our photographer Dan Dealy with photos from the evening including shots of Phife, Q-tip, Consequence, Jay Electronica, KRS-One, Michael Rapaport, Talib Kweli and more.

LACED UP at LOS FELIZ
Jacques Renault is out spinning at Los Feliz tonight as part of Capsule with sponsors Generic Surplus. All good things here. Los Feliz is a fun spot in the LES with its own take on the secret back room and Jacques is not only a great DJ but a nice guy as well. The guy used to spin a ton of parties back during my Surface magazine days and was always a pleasure to work with.
Speaking of Capsule, we hit the show, along with Cargo and Project, and should have some shots and videos up in the next week. Lots of big projects pending and in the works right now, our apologies if things have slowed a bit around here.
