Madlib Espresso Blend

by whizhouse September 1, 2010

I accidentally posted my reblog of Resun.says.dope’s posting of the Madlib Espresso press release over at whizhouse. The problem with running KeapHope with my original tumblr login. My thoughts below, for the full release on the product visit stonesthrow:

One thing that has been of growing interest to me in relationship to music is the way in which artists can look a bit outside the box to make that cash. The idea of licensing music for TV, video games, movies and products is quickly becoming one of the only ways for an artist to truly earn a living and that paired with a heavy tour schedule is the apparent answer to the slow and eventual death of dollars for albums. This dilemma is rearranging the music world so much so that labels are forcing artists into 360 deals to maintain profit on artists through all of their endeavors, and not just back end on the music.

I don’t know what kind of deal Madlib has setup with Stonesthrow but its safe to say that both he and his label are some of the most inventive when it comes to finding new ways to trade cash for a physical project. When you can’t sell a CD anymore what do you do next? For Madlib, it became to create a niche product that likely has high markup and will be considered a must have for his fan base. Followers of most Stonesthrow artists seem to be the collector type. Those that care as much about buying the vinyl and the t-shirt as they do about downloading. I think they hit a home run here, and although most artists do not have the type of fan base to make this happen at a global level, there is, I believe, I take away here for all artists: Market and brand yourself beyond the normal channels. You never know what just might stick and become a buzzing product, and a buzzing product or idea could be that gateway to getting your music in more ears, and in turn, more dollars into your pocket. As an example of past idea that worked, look only as far as another Stonesthrow artists brilliance in Mayer Hawthorne. The success of his red heart shaped vinyl catapulted him from a DJ doing a two-track side project to a full fledged artists touring the nation and being the it artist for a moment in early 2010. His heart shaped USB drive might not have had the same response, but these are guys taking chances. It’s important to take those chances and continue to evolve the system before it takes you over.

Che Grand X Graffiti Beach PhotoMan I love seeing stuff like this. At work, stealing a few minutes, and diggin’ around a few of my favorite hip-hop sites and what do I see? The homie Che Grand posing with cardboard shark. Photo taken by Dan Dealy at the super fun Graffiti Beach party. I sent this over to Dealy and he immediately got hype for the next event. That’s right. A bigger, better, party coming in October.

EPISODE 2: Peter Rosenberg and the Hype Men discuss The Fresh Prince + OJ Da Juiceman audio drops + backstage stories from the WWE + Peter taking Ms. Jones’ office at Hot97 + Canibus + White on White hate + questioning Peter’s American pride + more! [Stream.] [Download.]

Plus: Download the “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit’ It (So So Def Remix)” feat. Big Pun, R.O.C., and Cam’ron.

I found that remix, with no help from Peter.

Those Rosenthal Brothers, at it again! What do you do when you’ve developed a name for yourself in hip-hop and want to branch out beyond sketch comedy videos (awesome, sketch comedy videos if I must say)? You start a podcast! They beat me to it! Although I never had the popular viral content on my resume that the brothers do, I did have a similar idea for a show to be recorded with the one and only Kozza of SOB’s. We recorded a first ep over at PNC Radio which just never got put out. Multiple calls, emails and tweets to A-King and the PNC team have gone unanswered, I felt like a low level artist at a label trying to find a release date. I should have gone independent…

And that is exactly what these guys have done. Pairing up ItsTheReal with Jensen Karp is Hypeman, recorded in the kitchen of the Rosenthal’s on the UES and already 3 episodes deep. For ep 3 the boys bring in one half of my favorite dead podcast “Juan Epstein,” Mr Peter Rosenberg. Amazing there is zero talk with the Hot 97 morning show host about his now defunct internet show but what they do discuss is great fun for any nerdy, white, hip-hop fan.

Head on over to hypemen.tumblr.com to download the previous two episodes and waste a couple hours of your work day…and one day I promise to get back behind a mic and relive my college radio days in podcast form.

With more than a decade’s worth of experience, photographer @JonathanMannion has captured some of the most iconic images in hip-hop and has acquired a celebrated career to show for it.

In 1996, a kid named Jonathan Mannion popped onto the hip-hop photography scene with a shot featured on the…

Worth sharing and hopefully very inspirational for all artists, photographers and dream chasers. Click over to Alexander Richter’s blog to read the a part of the interview with Jonathan Mannion and YRB, or head over to YRB for the full deal, written by Chad Ghiron.

Grand Taxonomy of RAP NAMES poster
See that little guy on the left? For $20 its mine, and can be yours as well with a quick visit to popchartlab.com. Hate rap music but love beer? Looks like they have that covered as well.
In all seriousness this is some great work and will be an excellent addition to the other numerous pieces of art that I’ve purchased in the last four years and have still not hung. Time to get on that.
For now I want to invite PopChart to collab on something in the future. We’ll be reaching out soon.

Axe Music presents: TI, King among kings

On Monday night the King of the South let the world know he was ready to take back his thrown with a special Axe Music performance at Capitale in the Lower East Side. The recently incarcerated rapper pulled out all the stops for his first stage performance in New York since his release, rocking alongside what he called the other “Kings” of the game. During a close to two hour set filled with firey emotion and non-stop energy, TI brought out the “King of Harlem,” Cam’ron, along with the Cam’s latest protege Vado, followed by Maino, Swizz Beatz, Kerri Hilson, Grand Hustle’s own B.o.B. and the Queen of hip-hop soul, Mary J. Blige. It was a stage show so big we had to share it. Check out the video above for a taste of TI and friends celebrating the return of the much missed charisma of TIP.

I originally wrote and shot this for Time Out’s music blog, The Volume, but they have been slow to post, so until they do, here it is for ya.

Apologies on the audio, new video file coming, issue with the upload.
Fixed!

Fan video: What these b!tches want!

You gotta love this. A brother to a KeapHope fan (thanks Laura!) purchased one our classic DMX t-shirts and it inspired this little performance at what only looks like a mess of Fraternity party that we are sorry we couldn’t attend. (We love drinking other people’s beer.) Check it out above, and below, our take on the exact same thing. If you still want one of these t-shirts we have about 6 left in Large. Drop us a line.

Newport Folk Festival

by keaphopeyo August 14, 2010

This post is a bit late due to all the other things we have going on, but the show was too good to go undocumented. I managed to make it up to Newport, RI for the Newport Folk Festival. KP and I ran the boat from Greenport, NY on Friday night and anchored just off the festival grounds. To put it simply it was an awesome line-up of folk inspired indie bands in one of the most scenic festival grounds in the country.

More photos after the jump

Unarguably one of the nicest nights of the summer, the KeapHope crew took a cruise down the East River to Governor’s Island to catch the Local Natives play for only their third time in New York. For the Local Natives (Los Angeles) – third time was a charm as it was their largest show to date - and it seemed it, as their energy could not be outdone. Playing all crowd favorites like (the following links are live clips taken by some hottie in the VIP section) World News, Airplanes, and Who Knows Who Cares from the debut album Gorilla Manor, they more-than-pleased the sold out crowd with their on point performance. I don’t think anyone of our crew left disappointed (or sober).

On another note…openers, We Barbarians from Orange County (familiar to Fred, KeapHope’s Chief Engineer) came in mostly unknown but left unforgotten as the three-piece warmed up the increasingly intoxicated beach crowd.

We Barbarians
Non-music related – there was a couple getting down to Al Green in the sand (creepy) and a LED-palm-tree climber amongst the masses.
If you haven’t made it down to the Beach for a show, definitely hit it up before summer is through (there REALLY is sand). Did I mention the view? Probably the best place to catch a show in NYC.  Some upcoming shows this month are Grizzly Bear (8.12), Neon Indian (8.14) and Dr. Dog (8.15). Also don’t miss Rock the Bells (8.28) where you might just catch one of KeapHope’s very own – snapping pics and taking names.
Credit is due to everyone who was at the Local Natives - Fred, KP, Kaye & Gus.
GoodOnYa.

(500) Days of Weezy

by whizhouse August 3, 2010

Here is a little something different for you Mashup lovin’ hypem searchin’ music fiends out there. Presented by MySickUncle, the, (500) Days of Weezy, mashes up some of Wayne’s more well known commercial hits with the soundtrack to the romance flick, (500) Days of Summer. A fun mix that comes with the appropriate apology and explanation from the creator himself: “This is not a mash up album, this is an album about Wayne. Apologies to Morrisey and Simon & Garfunkel for fucking with your songs.”

It’s been “liked” 10k times on FB, go download it before its gone.
